Description

Abstract

This investigation of music criticism in the daily press focuses on textual expressions of reason and emotions as constituents of the subgenre of concert reviews. The work is based on the assumption that the relation between reason and emotions presents difficulties to journalism in general, and the aim of the inquiry is to show how one particular journalistic genre, music criticism, deals with this problem. The study investigates a historical period spanning over two centuries, and the actual analysis concerns concert reviews in two Stockholm dailies, six particular years (1780, 1835, 1885, 1905, 1955, 1995). All in all, 621 concert reviews are analyzed.
