Beskrivning

This project aims to investigate the expressions and reception of surrealism in Sweden from 1930 to 2000, resulting in the first comprehensive study of surrealism in Sweden. Based on the hypothesis that while institutions like Moderna Museet are famous for their collections and exhibitions of international surrealist art, Swedish art-history writing has marginalized surrealist artists working in Sweden, we aim to revise and reevaluate the role of surrealism in Swedish cultural history. Through analyses of art works, exhibitions, critical discourse, and national and transnational artist networks we will produce case studies dealing with the national reception of surrealism in the 1930s, its manifestations in the 1940s, the history of surrealist exhibitions in Sweden, the female and male surrealist artist’s role, and the late 20th century revival of surrealism in Sweden. Using concepts such as new cultural history, double marginalisation, and a decentralised idea of surrealism, the project will problematise surrealism as both present and absent in a Swedish cultural sphere directed by welfare-political agendas and an overarching suspicion of surrealism perceived as strange and irrational.
